What Does a Registered BAS Agent Cost in Australia?

24 September 202612 min read

A registered BAS agent’s cost in Australia depends on whether you need lodgement-only help or ongoing bookkeeping with GST, PAYG and payroll kept clean. Girl Friday Australia publishes clear floors: BAS & IAS from $180 per quarter, bookkeeping from $250 per month, and most small-business clients land around $200–$600 per month depending on volume and complexity. The cheapest quote is rarely the right one if the books underneath the BAS are a mess — you pay for accurate numbers, on-time lodgement, and someone who can talk to the ATO when something looks off.

If you are comparing quotes and feeling sticker-shocky, you are in the right place. Girl Friday is a registered BAS agent, Xero Certified Advisor, and Xero Gold Partner. We work Australia-wide, remote-first, with no lock-in contracts and a reply within one business day.

What is a registered BAS agent (and why the fee exists)?

A registered BAS agent is authorised by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) to provide BAS services for a fee. That generally covers ascertaining GST and PAYG amounts, preparing and lodging activity statements, and related advice that applies BAS provisions. Unregistered “bookkeepers” who charge to prepare or lodge your BAS can put both of you on the wrong side of the rules.

You are not only buying a form. You are buying:

  • Someone who can lawfully lodge your BAS or IAS for a fee
  • Access (when eligible) to the ATO’s BAS agent lodgment program concessions on some quarterly due dates
  • Professional standards, education requirements, and professional indemnity expectations that sit with TPB registration
  • A plain-English explanation of what you owe (or what refund you expect) before anything hits the ATO

You can still lodge your own BAS through ATO online services. Many owners do. A registered agent makes sense when GST coding is messy, payroll sits on the form, you want the agent lodgement concessions, or you simply do not want quarter-end panic.

Girl Friday’s published starting prices

Most of our small-business clients sit in the $200–$600 per month band once bookkeeping volume, payroll, and how clean the file already is are scoped. Catch-up work (months or years behind) is quoted after we see the backlog — there is no honest one-price fix for every shoebox.

What usually drives the quote up or down

Two businesses can both “just need a BAS” and get very different fees. The drivers are boring and real:

1. How clean the books already are

If bank feeds are reconciled, GST codes are consistent, and payroll reports match the ledger, lodgement is mostly review and submit. If feeds are months behind, GST is guessed, or owner drawings masquerade as wages, the agent has to fix the file before the form means anything. That is bookkeeping time, not a cheap stamp.

2. Transaction volume and entity type

A sole trader with one bank account and 40 lines a month is not the same as a company with multiple cards, merchant settlements, stock, and subcontractors. Trusts and companies with related-party payments also need cleaner characterisation in the books (and your tax agent still owns income-tax strategy).

3. Payroll, STP and super

PAYG withholding on the BAS, Single Touch Payroll, and super obligations add review time. From 1 July 2026, Payday Super means employers generally pay super each payday so funds can be received and allocated within seven business days — your bookkeeping and payroll setup need to support that rhythm.

4. Lodgement frequency

Quarterly BAS is the common small-business pattern. Some businesses also lodge a monthly IAS (instalment activity statement) for PAYG withholding even when GST is quarterly. More lodgements mean more review cycles.

5. Scope you actually buy

Compare apples to apples:

  • Lodgement-only — you keep the books; the agent reviews figures and lodges
  • Bookkeeping + BAS — reconciliations, coding, reports, then lodgement
  • Catch-up + then retainer — fix the backlog, then stay current
  • Tax returns — income-tax returns are a separate engagement (we offer them on our tax page; complex planning still belongs with your tax agent or accountant)

Lodgement-only vs bookkeeping retainer: which costs less over a year?

A low quarterly lodgement fee looks attractive until you spend your evenings coding GST and chasing bank lines. A monthly bookkeeping retainer costs more on paper and usually costs less in time, missed credits, and ATO follow-ups.

Rough decision guide:

  • Lodgement-only suits you if Xero (or MYOB/QuickBooks) is current, GST codes are trusted, and you only want a registered agent to review and lodge
  • Bookkeeping + BAS suits you if reconciliation slips, staff process bills inconsistently, or you want monthly P&L and cash visibility — not just a quarterly form
  • Catch-up first suits you if you are already late on BAS or the file has drifted for months (how catch-up works)

Girl Friday’s model is the ally version: keep the file healthy so BAS night is boring. That is the point.

What you get for the fee (and what you do not)

Usually included when you engage a registered BAS agent for lodgement

  • Review of GST, PAYG withholding and other labels on the activity statement
  • Preparation and electronic lodgement to the ATO
  • A plain-English summary of payment or refund expectation
  • Help with routine ATO correspondence about the statement

Often extra (or a different engagement)

  • Full bank reconciliation and historical catch-up
  • Software migration (for example MYOB to Xero)
  • Complex payroll repairs or STP corrections
  • Income-tax planning, Division 7A structuring advice, or trust distribution strategy — speak to your tax agent or accountant for that layer even if we keep the books tax-ready

We will tell you when something is outside BAS-agent scope. Clarity beats a surprise invoice.

BAS agent lodgment program: the timing benefit (not a fee discount)

Registered BAS agents who lodge electronically through Online services for agents or the practitioner lodgment service may access the ATO’s BAS agent lodgment program concessions on eligible quarterly activity statements. For 2026–27, examples include:

  • Quarter 1 (Jul–Sep): original due 28 October 2026 → agent concession 25 November 2026
  • Quarter 2 (Oct–Dec): original due 28 February 2027 → no agent lodgement concession
  • Quarter 3 (Jan–Mar): original due 28 April 2027 → agent concession 26 May 2027
  • Quarter 4 (Apr–Jun): original due 28 July 2027 → agent concession 25 August 2027 (confirm when the next program is published)

Standard monthly activity statements generally have no electronic lodgement concession (with limited December monthly rules for some clients). Eligibility depends on how the previous statement was lodged and other ATO conditions — your agent will confirm what applies to you. Concessions are about time, not a cheaper GST bill.

How to compare BAS agent quotes without getting burned

Ask every provider the same five questions:

  1. Are you a registered BAS agent (or tax agent)? Check the TPB register before you pay anyone to prepare or lodge for a fee.
  2. What exactly is included? Lodgement only, reconciliations, payroll review, ATO mail, meetings?
  3. Fixed fee or hourly? Fixed retainers are easier on cash flow; hourly catch-up should be scoped with a range.
  4. What software do you work in? Girl Friday prefers Xero and also works with MYOB, QuickBooks, spreadsheets, and catch-up from a shoebox.
  5. What happens if the file is dirty? A tiny lodgement fee that assumes a perfect file is a trap if yours is not.

Also compare soft terms that matter: lock-in (we have none), response time (we aim for one business day), and whether you get a human who explains the numbers in plain English.

When a higher fee is the cheaper choice

Pay for more help when:

  • You have missed BAS or IAS due dates and need catch-up plus lodgement
  • GST coding has been inconsistent and you suspect credits were missed or overclaimed
  • You hired staff and payroll/PAYG/super now sits on the form every period
  • Your accountant cannot finalise EOFY because the ledger does not reconcile
  • You are scaling and need monthly reporting, not a quarterly scramble

Underpaying for a rubber-stamp lodgement is expensive when the ATO asks questions later. Accuracy first; fee second.

BAS agent vs tax agent vs bookkeeper — cost roles in one line

  • Bookkeeper (unregistered for BAS services): great for data entry and reconciliations under instruction; cannot charge to prepare/lodge BAS as a BAS service
  • Registered BAS agent: GST, PAYG on activity statements, lodgement, payroll-related BAS work within scope
  • Tax agent / accountant: income tax returns, structuring, Division 7A strategy, trust and company tax planning

Girl Friday sits in the BAS-agent + bookkeeping lane (with tax return options on our tax page). For a deeper role split, see BAS agent vs tax agent and bookkeeper vs accountant.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a registered BAS agent cost in Australia?

It depends on scope. Girl Friday’s published floors are BAS & IAS from $180 per quarter and bookkeeping from $250 per month, with most small-business clients around $200–$600 per month. Lodgement-only engagements cost less than full bookkeeping; catch-up is scoped separately after we see the backlog.

Is a cheap BAS lodgement a good deal?

Only if your books are already clean and the provider is a registered BAS or tax agent. A low fee that skips reconciliation can miss GST credits or lodge numbers that invite ATO questions. Ask what is included before you compare headline prices.

Do I have to use a BAS agent, or can I lodge myself?

You can lodge yourself through ATO online services. Many owners do. A registered agent helps when you want review, agent lodgement concessions (when eligible), payroll on the form handled properly, or simply less quarter-end stress.

Does using a BAS agent change what GST I pay?

No. Concessions in the BAS agent lodgment program are about due dates for eligible statements, not a discount on GST. You still pay (or claim) the amounts that match your correctly coded supplies and acquisitions.

What does Girl Friday include for BAS clients?

Complex income-tax strategy, restructuring, or Division 7A planning should be confirmed with your tax agent or accountant.
